ChatGPT Health Android Support Spotted With Health Connect Access

OpenAI appears to be preparing ChatGPT Health support for Android’s Health Connect, which would let the chatbot read fitness and body data synced from phones, smartwatches and fitness trackers. Code found in version 1.2026.300 of the ChatGPT Android app includes several new health data permissions, Android Authority reported after an APK teardown. The feature is not live, and OpenAI has not announced it.

Health Connect is the Android system layer that lets health and fitness apps share data with each other. Wearables and apps such as Google Health write their readings there, so a single connection could give ChatGPT access to data from many devices at once.

What ChatGPT Health Could Read on Android

According to the teardown, the app now references permissions to read body weight, basal metabolic rate, body fat, lean muscle mass and bone mass. It also lists reproductive health data, including menstruation, sexual activity and ovulation records.

Two permissions stand out. READ_HEALTH_DATA_HISTORY lets an app read records older than the default 30 day window, which would allow ChatGPT to look for patterns over months instead of days. READ_HEALTH_DATA_IN_BACKGROUND would let it pull new data without the user opening the app.

Android Authority also found two new app screens for Health Connect permission rationale and permission usage. Android requires these screens to explain why an app wants health data, which suggests the work is fairly advanced. Still, code found in a teardown can change or be dropped before release, and no rollout date has been given.

Closing the Gap With iPhone

The move would fix an obvious imbalance. Health in ChatGPT, available to logged-in users 18 and older in the US, already lets people connect Apple Health, supported medical records, One Medical and Function Health. Connecting Apple Health requires an iPhone, and Android users currently have no equivalent way to share their own activity, sleep or body data with the assistant.

OpenAI says connected Apple Health information and medical records are not used to train its foundation models or to target ads, and that ChatGPT asks for permission by default before using that data in an answer. The company has not said whether the same terms would apply to data from Health Connect.

What It Means for You

For Android users with a fitness tracker or a smartwatch such as the Pixel Watch 5, the integration could turn scattered numbers into plain language summaries of sleep, activity and weight trends. Health Connect lets users choose which data types each app can read and revoke access at any time, so it will be worth reviewing those settings before granting broad or background access.

The plan also raises familiar questions about AI and medical advice. OpenAI has faced scrutiny over how ChatGPT handles sensitive topics, from new teen safety limits to a lawsuit over health advice, and says Health is meant to support, not replace, medical care.
