ChatGPT Work Tab Merges Into Chat as Codex Shares Usage Limits

OpenAI is folding the ChatGPT Work tab into regular chat, the company told subscribers in an email on November 2, 2026. A combined Chat and Work experience will first be tested with a small group of users in the coming weeks, and ChatGPT and Codex will start drawing from one shared usage allowance.

The ChatGPT desktop app currently splits into ChatGPT and Codex sections, and the ChatGPT side is divided again into Chat and Work tabs. As TechCrunch notes, that layout makes it easy to lose track of where a project lives. The merge is meant to remove the need to switch modes when a simple question turns into a bigger task.

What the Merged ChatGPT Work Experience Does

“This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place,” OpenAI wrote in the email. “You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work.”

In practice, the agent features that sat behind the Work tab will be available from the same conversation where you start chatting. OpenAI has been pushing ChatGPT toward this kind of hands-on work since GPT-6.1 Terra brought advanced computer use in October. Codex stays a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

OpenAI has not given a date for the wider rollout. Users outside the test group will keep the current two-tab layout for now.

One Allowance for ChatGPT and Codex

The bigger change for paying users is how usage is counted. According to OpenAI’s Help Center page on usage limits, Plus, Pro and Business plans will share a single allowance across ChatGPT and Codex starting in December, measured in tokens.

  • How much of the allowance a request uses depends on the model and the task; advanced models and complex jobs use more.
  • Instant chat does not draw from the allowance, and the email describes it as unlimited on paid plans.
  • Combined remaining usage and reset times will appear under Settings, then Usage.
  • If you hit the limit, you can wait for the reset, upgrade your plan or buy credits for eligible features.

OpenAI says it expects most users will not need to wait for resets more often than they do now. Heavy Codex users are the group to watch: coding sessions and agent tasks in ChatGPT will now eat into the same budget.

What It Means for You

The change follows a busy few days for ChatGPT subscriptions. On October 29, OpenAI doubled ChatGPT Pro usage limits and canceled a planned cut to the $200 tier, so Pro users go into the shared pool with a larger budget than they had a week ago.

The move also fits a broader shift toward AI agents that work across your whole computer, as seen in tools such as Vercel’s agent-desktop. If you rely on Codex for daily coding, keep an eye on the new Usage screen once the shared allowance goes live in December.
