Countdown to 2 nm processors!

As the race in the smartphone industry accelerates, so does the demand for processors. TSMC has accelerated its efforts for 2nm processors to maintain its leadership in the market. According to a new report, TSMC will start production of its 2nm semiconductor architecture at the end of the year.

TSMC starts production for 2nm processors in 2024

Information from China revealed that TSMC wants to ship chips manufactured using 2nm technology to some customers in the fourth quarter of 2024. If test production goes smoothly, the company is targeting mass production of 2nm chips in the second quarter of 2025.

The 2nm architecture will be an important milestone for both TSMC and the processor world. Because it will be the first architecture to use gates-all-around FET (GAAFET) transistor technology, going beyond the FinFET transistors that have driven Moore’s Law in the last decade.

GAAFETs, also known as nanosheet or nanoribbon FETs, improve electrostatic control. This means a significant increase in performance and power efficiency.

According to the information, TSMC will produce the first 2nm chips at its factory in Taiwan. Among the first customers to receive 2nm test chips are Apple and MediaTek.

On the other hand, Intel is working on the Intel 20A architecture based on GAAFET transistors. In addition, Samsung aims to produce 2nm processors under the SF2 node in 2025.
