DJI Matrice 5T Adds LiDAR and 1K Thermal, but Skips the US

The DJI Matrice 5T is a new folding enterprise drone that combines LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar and a native 1280x1024 thermal camera with up to 59 minutes of flight time. The drone went on sale on November 5 through DJI Enterprise dealers, but its spec sheet carries no FCC approval, so it cannot legally be sold in the United States.

DJI calls the drone its newest compact enterprise flagship. It targets emergency response, infrastructure inspection and surveying, and DJI rates it IP55 for dust and rain with an operating range of -20 to 50°C (-4 to 122°F).

What Cameras Does the DJI Matrice 5T Have?

The headline feature is the thermal camera. Its native 1K resolution has four times the pixels of the 640x512 sensors common on enterprise drones, and an ultra-high-resolution mode raises output to 2560x2048. Alongside it, the drone carries three 50MP cameras: a wide camera with a 1/0.98-inch sensor and f/1.8 lens, a 3x medium telephoto and a telephoto with 11x optical and 176x hybrid zoom.

According to DJI's launch announcement, the telephoto can read license plates from up to 400 meters away. In addition, the wide camera delivers color images in light as low as 0.01 lux, while a laser rangefinder reaches 3,000 meters.

How Does It Avoid Power Lines in the Dark?

This is the first time DJI has put LiDAR, mmWave radar and omnidirectional vision together on a compact enterprise drone. The rotating LiDAR can detect thin obstacles such as power lines up to 32 meters away at night. Meanwhile, the radar keeps sensing through fog, rain and dust, and the fisheye cameras hold visual positioning down to 0.5 lux. DJI says these sensors also let the drone map its surroundings where GPS signals are weak, such as between high-rises or in deep canyons.

How Much Does the DJI Matrice 5T Cost?

DJI has not published a global price. In mainland China, the official price is 57,488 yuan, or about $8,600, according to Gizmochina. UK dealer Heliguy lists pre-orders at about $8,655 before VAT, with the battery sold separately and first shipments expected the week of November 23.

Why Can't US Buyers Get the Matrice 5T?

The FCC added foreign-made drones to its Covered List on December 22, 2025, and new models on that list cannot receive the equipment authorization needed for US import or sale. As DroneXL's launch report notes, the 5T's radio specs list regulators in Canada, the EU, China and Japan, but not the FCC. Older, already authorized models such as the Matrice 4T remain legal to buy and fly.

That gap is opening the door for US-made rivals. Police and fire departments are a key market for drones like this, which is exactly where Axon's $1.2 billion bet on Skydio is aimed. Drones are also changing fast in other fields, from drone delivery networks to military tests in which drones launch smaller drones.

In our view, the Matrice 5T is the strongest compact public safety drone DJI has made, and that is precisely the problem for American agencies. Their counterparts in Canada and Europe can now fly a drone with better thermal imaging and smarter obstacle sensing, while US teams wait for domestic suppliers to catch up or stick with the older Matrice 4T.
