GTA 6 Preload: Start Times, 212GB File Size and How to Prepare
The GTA 6 preload starts November 10 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here are the exact start times, the 212GB file size and how to get the download going.

The GTA 6 preload now has a firm date. Rockstar Games confirmed on November 3 that players who pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI can start downloading the game on November 10, nine days before launch on November 19. The download is big, too: up to 212GB depending on your console, so it is worth clearing space now rather than on launch night.
Below is everything you need to know: when the GTA 6 preload starts on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, how much storage you need, what changes for physical copies and how to make sure the download starts on its own.
When Does the GTA 6 Preload Start?
Rockstar’s official Newswire post sets different start times for the two console families:
- PlayStation 5: November 10 at midnight, local time. Because the start follows each region’s clock, players in New Zealand and Australia get the download first and North America comes last.
- Xbox Series X|S: November 10 at 12:00 a.m. GMT, all regions at once. In the US that means the download opens on the evening of November 9: 4 p.m. PT or 7 p.m. ET.
That gives Xbox players in the Americas a small head start, while PS5 players in Europe, Turkey and Asia will see the download unlock during their own night of November 9 to 10. Earlier reports had pointed to November 12 as the preload date; Rockstar’s announcement puts it two days earlier.
Grand Theft Auto VI pre-load begins on November 10. There’s still time to pre-order and ensure you’re able to experience Grand Theft Auto VI when it launches on November 19.

GTA 6 File Size: How Much Space Do You Need?
Rockstar lists the download at up to 212GB, with the exact figure depending on the device. Sony’s own PlayStation Blog announcement is blunter and asks PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212GB before the pre-download begins.
That number is slightly higher than the roughly 210GB figure that surfaced in late October, when the GTA 6 download size first appeared on tracking sites. In practice it means:
- On an original 825GB PS5, the game takes up roughly a third of the usable storage.
- On a 1TB PS5 or Xbox Series X, it fills about a quarter of the drive.
- On a 512GB Xbox Series S, it needs more than half of the space you can actually use.
Day one patches can add to the total, so leaving a buffer of a few dozen gigabytes on top of 212GB is the safer move. If your console is close to full, now is a good time to move older games to an external drive or delete the ones you have finished.
How to Preload GTA 6 on PS5
The preload is only available to players who have pre-ordered the game. Once that is done, there are two ways to make sure the download starts:
Let the console download it automatically
Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download. Leave the console in rest mode with internet access enabled, and it will start pulling the game as soon as the preload opens in your region.
Start the download manually
Open your Game Library, find Grand Theft Auto VI in the purchased list and select download. You can also do this from the PlayStation App on your phone, which sends the download to your console remotely.
How to Preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
On Xbox, a pre-ordered digital copy usually installs automatically if the console is set to keep games up to date. To start it yourself, open My games & apps, go to Full library and check the pre-ordered games section. The Xbox app on mobile can also queue the install remotely while you are away from home.
What About Physical Copies?
This is where many players will be caught out. Boxed copies of GTA 6 do not contain the game on a disc; they come with a download code inside the case. Rockstar says these code-in-box copies reach retailers from November 12, so anyone buying physical can redeem the code from that date and then start the same large download.
If you plan to pick up a boxed copy, make sure you redeem it well before launch day. Leaving a 212GB download for the night of November 18 is a recipe for a long wait. You can compare what each version includes in our look at the GTA 6 editions and package contents.
GTA 6 Release Time and Launch Extras
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 at midnight local time, which again means New Zealand gets in first. Preloading is the only way to be sure you can play right at that moment, since launch night download speeds are likely to suffer under demand. For the background on the date and the gameplay details Rockstar has shared so far, see our earlier report on the GTA 6 release date and key gameplay details.
Rockstar is also adding a couple of collectibles. On launch day, a printable cover poster and a map of the state of Leonida will be available as free downloads. A double-sided physical poster will be sold for $0.99 (£0.75) on the Rockstar Store, or included for free with any other purchase there. It does not ship inside the boxed copies.
