Instagram Edits Mac is now available as a free desktop app, Meta said on November 5, 2026. Creators can cut Reels and short videos on a bigger screen with a mouse and keyboard instead of pinning everything to a phone.

Meta launched Edits on mobile last year to take on CapCut. CapCut has shipped desktop apps for Windows and Mac since 2021; however, Instagram's reply is Mac-only for now. So what does that change for you?

If you own a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later), you can finish a project on desktop and publish straight to Instagram. Meanwhile, Windows users still have no official date.

What does Instagram Edits Mac include?

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in his announcement reel that a desktop app was the number-one request from more than 50 million monthly Edits users. Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, put the pain point plainly in Meta's blog post: "A lot of creators have described the same moment to us: a project gets too big for your phone. You've got a dozen clips going, you're trying to land a cut on the exact beat, and your thumb covers the part of the timeline you need to see."

Key desktop tools called out by Instagram and the press:

  • A full multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, and audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts
  • Color wheels, curves, and log conversions, plus custom fonts and LUTs
  • Custom keyboard shortcuts, including imports from other editors
  • Licensed music and effects, plus unlimited auto captions in multiple languages
  • Saved mobile audio and text styles that sync to desktop
  • Horizontal and vertical formats, watermark-free 4K export, and direct Instagram publish with tags, location, and trial Reels

The Verge also reports that Edits Desktop ships an MCP (Model Context Protocol, a way for AI agents to call app tools) so creators can pair agents such as Meta's Muse with manual editing. Treat that as an early add-on; the core pitch is precise desktop control.

How does it stack up against CapCut?

CapCut still owns the cross-platform desktop habit. In contrast, Edits' edge is staying inside Instagram: sign in, edit, and post without bouncing a file to your phone. Additionally, no watermark and 4K export help if you also share elsewhere.

In our view, Mac-based creators get a real workflow upgrade today. However, seamless same-project editing across phone and Mac is still in development, so Meta says weekly desktop updates are planned.

Is there a Windows version?

Instagram's official desktop page is clear: Edits on desktop is macOS only. There is no Windows or Linux timeline yet. The app is free on the Mac App Store, and an Instagram account is required.

Where can you download it?

Grab Edits for Mac from the Mac App Store or edits.instagram.com/desktop. Mosseri's announcement reel is on Instagram.

We previously covered Edits' early traction in this downloads story and its later carousel tools in this feature update. For CapCut rivalry context, see also YouTube Create versus CapCut.
