Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro Get Final OS Update by March 2027

Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro will get their last operating system feature update next year. Meta said on November 2 that Horizon OS v2.13 will start rolling out to both headsets in January 2027 and reach every device by March 2027, after which they will only receive security patches and critical bug fixes through December 2027.

The headsets will not stop working. Owners keep the features they already have, their purchased apps and games, and access to the Store, according to Meta’s support page on the changes. Meta says users can keep using the devices after the security updates end.

Meta Quest 2 Support Timeline: What Changes and When

The transition happens in three steps:

  • January to March 2027: Horizon OS v2.13 rolls out as the final OS feature release. Meta VR OS SDK v213 becomes the last SDK version that supports Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
  • Through December 2027: Meta ships quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes for v2.13.
  • December 2027: Developers can no longer submit brand new apps for Quest 2 and Quest Pro. New titles will target Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer hardware only.

After v2.13, any new OS features, platform capabilities or APIs will be limited to Quest 3, Quest 3S and later devices, and Meta will stop testing new software releases against the older headsets.

What Keeps Working on Quest 2 and Quest Pro

Meta’s developer guidance lists what stays in place: published apps and games, including multiplayer, cross-play with Quest 3 and Quest 3S, Store purchases and downloads, PC VR, Meta Avatars, voice calls, messaging and the built-in browser. Developers can also keep shipping updates to existing apps, and Meta says there is currently no end date for those updates.

Studios that decide to drop the older headsets must give customers at least 180 days’ written notice if the change would cut off access to content or essential services. Developers can also freeze a final build for Quest 2 and Quest Pro while their main version moves to newer hardware.

Why Meta Is Moving On Now

Meta now describes Quest 3 and Quest 3S as “the baseline for Meta VR gamers,” The Verge reported.

The change comes ahead of Meta VR Glasses, a lighter headset planned for spring 2027 that will use the same OS and SDKs as the Quest 3 family. The glasses are widely reported to be the device codenamed Phoenix, as seen in our report on the Project Phoenix glasses design.

Quest 2 launched in October 2020 at $299 with a Snapdragon XR2 chip and 6GB of RAM, and within six months it had outsold all earlier Oculus headsets combined. Quest Pro followed in October 2022 at $1,499, but Meta cut its price to $999 a few months later. Meta began winding down sales of both models when it introduced Quest 3S in September 2024.

The plan mirrors how Meta retired the original Quest, which lost OS feature updates in 2023 and security updates in 2024. The glasses were reportedly pushed back from late 2026, a delay we noted when Meta postponed its Phoenix device.

What It Means for Quest 2 Owners

If you own a Quest 2 or Quest Pro, nothing changes right away. Your headset will keep running your library through 2027 and beyond, and multiplayer games with Quest 3 players should keep working where cross-play is supported. Over time, though, new apps and features will skip your device, and some developers may end support with six months’ notice.

Quest 2 owners who want new features will need to move to Quest 3S, Quest 3 or the upcoming glasses. Meta has kept adding apps to the Quest platform, such as the Threads app for Quest headsets, but new platform features will now target the newer hardware first.
