The Nothing AI device will ship in December 2026 with no new screen, CEO Carl Pei said on November 4. He shared the news in an essay titled "Toolmakers" on X. However, the London company has not revealed the product's name, price, specs or exact launch date.

Pei called it "a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product." He added, "It has no new screen, and it couldn't have been an app." A teaser image shows only the Nothing wordmark above a dark, rounded corner. As a result, the form factor is still a mystery.

What We Know About the Nothing AI Device

The Nothing AI device is the first hardware result of plans Pei laid out in September 2025. Back then, the company raised $200 million in a Series C round led by Tiger Global at a $1.3 billion valuation. Pei also promised "AI-native" devices and an AI operating system, with the first product due in 2026.

In his essay, Pei argues that the industry's hunt for an "iPhone moment" is premature. "Looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end," he wrote. Instead, he expects AI to prove itself in productivity first. After all, PCs and phones also caught on at work before they reached homes.

His main point is what he calls a "context gap." Models are already capable, Pei says, but they know little about your day. That is because ideas from conversations and meetings rarely get written down. "The intelligence is already here, and the context is what's missing," he wrote.

Is It a Recorder, a Pin or Glasses?

Nothing has not said, but the clues point to an ambient capture device such as an AI voice recorder. 9to5Google notes that "couldn't have been an app" is a common line for dedicated AI recorders. Plaud and Anker already sell products in that category. In addition, Nothing's phones offer a version of this idea through the Essential Key and Essential Space, which turn voice notes and screenshots into tasks.

Smart glasses look less likely for this launch. Reports say Nothing's glasses are planned for 2027. Earlier leaks also described two separate smart glasses models, one of them reportedly without cameras.

Why It Matters

Screenless AI gadgets have a rough track record. For example, the Humane Ai Pin and the Rabbit R1 struggled after launch. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly working on its own device with Jony Ive. By pitching a work tool rather than a lifestyle gadget, Pei seems to be setting expectations carefully.

Nothing is also adding software talent. This week, Sam Hall of Wafer Systems said he is joining the company. Pei replied that a mobile OS that "feels like it understands you" is exactly what Nothing wants to build. Pei has also been vocal about rivals, as when he criticized the high cost of the iPhone Duo.

For buyers, the key details are still missing. Price, regional availability and phone requirements should become clear before shipments start in December.
