PS6 Release Date, Price and Specs: Everything We Know So Far

The PS6 release date is still the biggest open question in console gaming. Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6, and its CEO says the company has not even decided when to launch it or how much it will cost. What we do have is a growing pile of leaks, analyst forecasts and executive comments that point in one direction: a later and more expensive console than many fans expected. Here is everything we know as of November 2026, with rumors clearly marked as rumors.

When Is the PS6 Release Date?

There is no official PS6 release date. On Sony’s earnings call on May 8, 2026, CEO Hiroki Totoki said: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” He added that memory prices are expected to stay very high through Sony’s fiscal year 2027, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028, and that Sony would consider “changing business models” to find the best strategy, as reported by VGC.

History suggests late 2027. The PS4 launched in 2013 and the PS5 in November 2020, so a seven year gap lands on November 2027. Leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead has claimed manufacturing is planned for mid 2027 with a fall 2027 launch. However, a Bloomberg report said Sony was considering 2028 or even 2029, and MST Financial analyst David Gibson has argued the PS5 generation will be extended. We covered the case for a delay in our earlier piece on why Sony may delay the next console.

Our read: late 2027 is still possible, but 2028 now looks at least as likely. Sony has said it is increasing investment in its “next generation platform,” so the hardware is clearly in development. The timing is a business decision that depends on memory prices.

Why Is the PS6 Being Delayed?

The short answer is RAM. AI data centers are buying up DRAM and NAND flash, and consumer hardware is paying the price. Sony has already raised PS5 prices outside Japan, and the PS5 Pro now costs $900 in the US. If you want the background, see our explainer on why RAM is so expensive right now.

PS6 Specs: What the Leaks Say

Everything below is unconfirmed. The most detailed leak comes from Moore’s Law Is Dead, which describes an AMD chip codenamed “Orion” with these specs:

  • A roughly 280 mm² chip built on TSMC’s 3nm process, drawing around 160W
  • 54 RDNA 5 compute units, with 52 active
  • 7 to 8 Zen 6c CPU cores, plus 2 low power Zen 6 cores reserved for the operating system
  • GDDR7 memory on a 160 bit bus at 32 Gbps, for about 640 GB/s of bandwidth
  • An estimated 34 to 40 TFLOPS, compared with 10.28 TFLOPS on the PS5

The same leak claims 2.5 to 3 times the PS5’s raster performance and 6 to 12 times its ray tracing performance. Those ray tracing numbers need context. Leaker KeplerL2 calculated that in a game with light ray tracing such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a 10x faster ray tracing pipeline translates to about 3x higher frame rates in practice, as Wccftech explains. That is still a big generational jump, just not a tenfold one.

How Much Will the PS6 Cost?

Again, Sony has not set a price. KeplerL2 claims the RAM and NAND storage alone currently cost Sony more than $680 per console, which would push the retail price to around $1,000. Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix, is rumored to cost even more to build, and Polygon’s roundup notes the PS6 is expected to undercut it while still landing at a very high price point.

Sony has also signaled it will not eat those costs. In a June 2026 investor Q&A, the company said: “As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.” It also said it is “carefully monitoring the market,” according to GameSpot. Older leaks that pointed to a $549 to $699 price predate the memory crisis and now look optimistic.

Is There a PS6 Handheld?

Possibly. Leaks describe a portable PlayStation codenamed “Canis” with 4 Zen 6c cores, 2 low power cores, 16 RDNA 5 compute units and LPDDR5X memory. Pricing is the problem here too: KeplerL2 said in August that a $600 handheld is “definitely not possible right now.” The idea already has critics, including a former PlayStation boss who questioned the plan.

Will PS6 Be Backward Compatible?

Sony has not confirmed it, but every leak so far describes an AMD based design that stays close to the PS5 architecture, which makes PS5 backward compatibility very likely. Sony has kept PS4 compatibility on the PS5, and breaking that with the next generation would be a surprise.

Bottom Line

The PS6 is coming, but Sony is openly letting memory prices decide when. Expect late 2027 at the earliest, a realistic chance of 2028, a price near $1,000 if current costs hold, and roughly 3x the PS5’s real world performance in ray traced games. We will update this guide as soon as Sony makes anything official.
