Shopify earnings for the third quarter of 2026 showed revenue up 32% to $3.74 billion, but the stock fell sharply on Tuesday, November 3, after gross merchandise volume (GMV) and subscription revenue came in below Wall Street estimates. Shares dropped more than 19% in premarket trading on Nasdaq, according to Investing.com.
Shopify Earnings at a Glance
In its Q3 2026 results release, Shopify reported the following for the quarter ended September 30, 2026:
- Revenue: $3.742 billion, up from $2.844 billion a year earlier (+32%, also 32% in constant currency)
- GMV: $119.1 billion, up from $92.0 billion
- Merchant Solutions revenue: $2.906 billion, up from $2.145 billion
- Subscription Solutions revenue: $836 million, up from $699 million
- Monthly recurring revenue (MRR): $230 million, up from $193 million
- Operating income: $568 million, up from $343 million
- Net income: $462 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, up from $264 million
- Free cash flow: $816 million, a 22% margin versus 18% a year ago
“We powered $119 billion in GMV, while continuing to build commerce into every surface, every agent, and increasingly, everywhere,” Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister pointed to “32% revenue growth and a 22% free cash flow margin” as proof of the company’s “consistent execution.”
Why Shopify Stock Fell
On profit, the quarter beat expectations. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.49 per share against a $0.47 consensus, and operating income topped estimates as spending came in lower than forecast. The problem was the growth metrics investors watch most closely. As Investing.com reported, GMV missed the $120.08 billion analysts expected, and subscription revenue fell short of the $850.2 million estimate.
Revenue growth is also slowing. Shopify’s revenue rose about 34% in the second quarter, and its guidance points to further cooling. With the stock trading at a high multiple of expected earnings and the broader tech sector already under pressure, a small miss on volume was enough to trigger a steep sell-off.
Q4 2026 Outlook
For the holiday quarter, Shopify expects:
- Revenue growth at a low-thirties percentage rate year over year
- Gross profit dollar growth at a high-twenties percentage rate
- Operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue
- Stock-based compensation of $155 million
- A free cash flow margin consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025
What It Means for Merchants and Investors
For businesses that run stores on Shopify, the results change little in the short term: the platform is still growing GMV by roughly 30% a year. The company is betting heavily on AI shopping, which it has highlighted since reporting an 11x jump in AI-driven orders in 2025.
That push now includes partners outside its own apps. In September, Shopify teamed up with Meta so the Muse AI assistant can browse Shopify stores and complete purchases through Shop Pay.
For investors, the reaction shows how high the bar is for richly valued software companies this earnings season. Shopify reported a day after Palantir’s latest earnings, another closely watched software report. Shopify’s Q4 numbers, covering Black Friday and Cyber Monday, will be the next test of whether its growth can hold above 30%.
