Siri AI Usage Limits Are Coming, Apple Will Sell Expanded Access

Siri AI usage limits are on the way, and Apple will charge people who want more. CEO John Ternus confirmed on Apple’s fiscal fourth quarter earnings call on November 2 that features running on Apple’s server-side models will be capped, with paid expanded access coming “in the future.” Apple has not shared a price, the size of the limits or a launch date.

Ternus made the comments in response to Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng, who asked about iCloud+ and how Apple could make money from Apple Intelligence. “There’s going to be some usage limits on features that rely on server-side models, which include Siri AI and intelligent photo editing and some other things like that,” Ternus said, according to the call transcript. “Anyone who needs greater capacity will be able to purchase expanded access in the future.”

Which Features Siri AI Usage Limits Will Cover

An updated Apple Support page on Apple Intelligence usage limits spells out the scope. Starting with the 2027 software releases, the capped features include Siri AI, Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing in Photos, Image Playground, the AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models in Shortcuts, and third-party apps that use Apple Foundation Models in Private Cloud Compute.

When you hit a limit, the feature becomes available again after a time-out period. Apple says limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand and other factors, and that “increased access to such features will be available for a fee.” Tasks that run fully on the iPhone, iPad or Mac are not part of the cap.

Why Apple Is Putting a Price on Cloud AI

The reason is cost. CFO Kevan Parekh said on-device processing is very efficient with “no real costs,” but server-side requests carry inference costs. Apple is still in the “very, very early stages” of working out the mix between the two, he added. Those cloud costs will be booked under services cost of sales, which is one reason Apple guided to a lower gross margin of 45% to 46% for the December quarter in its record fourth quarter results.

Scale explains the concern. Ternus said Siri already handles more than 2.5 billion requests a day. Siri AI launched in beta for US English in September with iOS 27 and added French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October, so cloud demand is still climbing.

What It Means for iPhone Users

For now, Siri AI stays free. The paid tier will most likely sit inside iCloud+, which Ternus described as moving beyond storage. Plans already bundle Apple TV and Apple Arcade in more than 100 countries, and some Apple Intelligence camera features in the Home app scale with the 2TB, 6TB and 12TB tiers. Google takes a similar route by tying expanded Gemini access to Google One plans.

The move also follows Apple’s push to bring its AI to more markets, including Apple Intelligence in China. Ternus, who spoke about his priorities in a recent interview, is signaling that the free ride on cloud AI will have a ceiling. Pricing details should come closer to the 2027 software releases.
