ABB Robotics SoftBank Deal Blocked by China at $5.4B

China barred SoftBank from buying ABB's robotics business in China, stalling a $5.375 billion deal. What does that mean for Son's AI robotics push?

ABB Robotics is at the center of a stalled SoftBank takeover after China blocked the Japanese investor from buying the Swiss firm's robotics business there. ABB said on November 5 that SoftBank had been told the Office of the Working Mechanism for Foreign Investment Security Review prohibited the China piece of a deal valued at $5.375 billion.

In October 2025 ABB signed an agreement to sell its Robotics division to SoftBank Group. Regulatory approvals sit with SoftBank. ABB said both sides remain in close dialogue and are working constructively on the transaction. SoftBank declined to comment to Reuters.

Why Did China Block the SoftBank ABB Robotics Deal?

The Financial Times, cited by Reuters, reported that SoftBank expected clearance until last week, when China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said it would not allow the acquisition. The NDRC reviews foreign deals that may raise national security issues.

According to that reporting, reviewers worried that robotics data could leave China and feed AI models abroad, including systems tied to OpenAI, where SoftBank is a major backer. SoftBank's stake and AI bets already showed up in our coverage of its huge OpenAI investment push.

Those OpenAI ties matter because SoftBank's robotics bet sits next to its broader AI portfolio, including the later OpenAI funding round at a $1.25 trillion valuation.

How Big Is China for ABB Robotics?

China is ABB's largest robotics market, about 30% of related business, Reuters noted. ABB runs roughly 30 local companies there with about 15,000 employees across nearly 130 cities, plus sales channels in nearly 700 cities. ABB Engineering (Shanghai) hosts the group's global robotics headquarters and a key R&D and production base.

That footprint makes a China prohibition hard to ignore. SoftBank Chief Executive Masayoshi Son has cast robotics as a core pillar of SoftBank's physical AI strategy, so the block also hits a signature growth bet.

Is This Part of a Wider China Crackdown?

Reuters framed the case as the second major deal China blocked this year after Meta was ordered to unwind its more than $2 billion purchase of AI startup Manus. That earlier episode sits beside our report on how Meta acquired Manus for a record AI price before Beijing forced a reversal.

Diplomatic friction between China and Japan after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's Taiwan comments also tightened mineral exports to Japan, Reuters added. SoftBank shares fell about 6.8% in Tokyo on the day the FT story circulated.

Our Take

A China veto on ABB Robotics does not automatically kill the global SoftBank deal, but it removes the crown jewel market SoftBank needed for scale. Expect renegotiation, a carve-out, or a long delay while both sides test whether Beijing will reconsider. For Son's robotics AI thesis, this is a hard reminder that capital alone cannot clear national security gates.
