YouTube Bug Kicks Videos Into the Mini Player and Cuts the Audio
A YouTube bug on Android and iPhone is pushing full-screen videos into the mini player and muting them. Here is what we know and how to get sound back.

A YouTube bug is kicking videos out of full-screen mode and into the app’s floating mini player without warning, and it cuts the audio at the same time. Users on both Android and iPhone have been reporting the problem since early October 2026, and as of November 1, Google has not confirmed the issue or said when a fix will arrive.
The glitch shows up in the middle of normal playback. A video running in full screen suddenly shrinks into the small window that YouTube normally uses when you browse the app while something plays. Tapping it back to full screen does not bring the sound back, so the video keeps playing silently.
What the YouTube Bug Does on Android and iPhone
Complaints started on Reddit, where one user described videos leaving full screen and losing sound with no screen touches involved. Commenters under that r/youtube thread said they were seeing the same thing.
The workaround differs from person to person. Some users get the audio back by closing the video and starting it again. In a second Reddit thread, that was not enough, and people had to fully close and reopen the YouTube app before sound returned.
The usual fixes have not helped either. One affected user said they cleared the app cache, uninstalled and reinstalled YouTube updates, force-stopped the app, restarted the phone, toggled playback settings and reset app preferences, and the bug kept coming back.
Is It Your Phone or YouTube?
Everything points to YouTube itself. The reports come from different phones and from both Android and iOS, which makes accidental taps, ghost touches or a single faulty device unlikely explanations.
Android Authority, which first wrote about the problem on October 30, said it had asked Google whether it is aware of the bug and working on a fix. Google has not responded publicly so far, and the TeamYouTube support account on X had not addressed it as of Sunday.
What You Can Do Until Google Fixes It
There is no reliable fix yet, but these steps have helped some users when the bug hits:
- Close the video completely and start it again to get the sound back.
- If the audio is still missing, swipe YouTube away from your recent apps and reopen it.
- Keep the app updated, since a fix is most likely to arrive through a YouTube app update or a server-side change.
- Report it from the app’s Help and feedback menu with your phone model and app version, so Google can narrow it down.
The timing is awkward for Google, which is pushing paid tiers hard after YouTube Premium passed 150 million subscribers.
Rivals are chasing long-form viewing too, with Instagram testing 90-minute videos.
Google has acknowledged other user-reported problems recently, including a Pixel Watch battery drain that it confirmed with a fix on the way. We will update this story if Google comments on the YouTube bug or ships a fix.
