YouTube Tamba Leak Points to a Social App With Followers and DMs

YouTube Tamba is the name of an unannounced social app that YouTube appears to be building, according to code found in the latest YouTube app for Android. The leaked strings point to followers, follow requests, direct messages, group chats and posts, which reportedly makes it look more like Instagram than a video player.

The find comes from an Android Authority APK teardown of YouTube version 21.44.534. Google has not announced Tamba, and nothing in the code says when, or whether, it will reach users.

What the YouTube Tamba Code Shows

The Tamba logo is tied to a separate package called com.google.android.youtube.sandbox. The YouTube app checks whether it is running as that package and changes its behavior, and the sandbox version even gets its own search suggestions and file providers, the way a standalone app would. Client IDs for both Android and iOS suggest Google could ship it on iPhone too.

Android Authority also pulled 38 new icons with a wobbly, hand-drawn look, covering home, search, create, camera, inbox, chat, stickers and a microphone. The logo pairs the word Tamba with a scribble that has a play button cut out of its center.

Followers, Group Chats and Voice Replies

Most of the new strings are notification types. Users could follow each other, send and approve follow requests, and share messages, photos and videos one on one or in group chats. Follow requests hint at private profiles, something YouTube does not really offer today, and one string suggests people could follow you before you even sign up.

Other strings mention hearts on posts, Shorts and comments, plus replies that carry a voice note or a Short. Shorts can apparently play inside chats and from the bottom navigation bar, a layout that echoes the push Meta made when Instagram went after YouTube with longer videos.

A Sandbox, Not a Finished Product

The internal name is “Project Sandbox,” and Tamba’s icons are labeled experimental. That suggests a testing ground for social features, possibly with a small group of users, rather than an app headed for a wide launch. The name Tamba appears only in the logo, so it could be a placeholder.

Some of these ideas are already arriving in the main app. YouTube’s video sharing and messaging feature is live for adults in the US, UK, Brazil and much of Europe, and YouTube said at Made on YouTube in September that group chats are coming. The company has also been adding social touches like GIF and image support in comments.

Why It Matters

Most YouTube links are still shared in other apps, so the conversation around them happens elsewhere. Tamba looks like an attempt to keep that conversation inside YouTube, much as WhatsApp keeps expanding its group chat features to keep users close. Until Google confirms the project, treat Tamba as early work in progress that may never ship in this form.
