Amazon began rolling out Alexa text shopping to invited U.S. customers on Nov. 6, 2026, according to Amazon's retail newsroom. Users can message the Alexa for Shopping agent by SMS to search products, compare options, build carts, and complete purchases.
How does Alexa text shopping work?
Invited shoppers get a text asking them to opt in, then a phone contact labeled "Alexa Shopping." They can send natural-language requests, share a photo of an item or outfit for similar matches, reorder past purchases, track deals, check package status, and ask Alexa to buy when a price hits a target.
Amazon says conversations started over text can continue in the Amazon Shopping app, on Amazon.com, and on Alexa devices, and the other way around. Rajiv Mehta, vice president of Conversational Shopping, said customers often jot needs in notes and chats, and the agent is now "just a text away."
Who can use Alexa text shopping today?
The launch starts with a small invitation-only group in the United States, with Amazon saying millions more will get access in the coming weeks. People without an invite can join a waitlist on Amazon's landing page. The company said more than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the last 12 months, and agentic feature use has grown more than eight times since the start of the year.
That agent push sits beside other commerce moves we have covered, including the Amazon Uber Eats Prime delivery deal.
Why is Amazon pushing SMS shopping agents now?
TechCrunch noted on Nov. 6, 2026 that the rollout comes after Amazon blocked Meta's Muse from querying its storefront in September, and just before the holiday shopping season. DoorDash and OpenAI have also offered text-based agent flows, so Amazon is keeping checkout inside its own SMS thread.
Platform fights over shopping agents also show up in broader AI product rules, such as the Meta commercial terms pause.
Our Take
Alexa text shopping is a clear bid to own the chat where people already type shopping lists. The 400 million usage figure shows the assistant already has scale; SMS makes it feel ambient without opening the app. The risk is spam fatigue and accidental purchases if auto-buy and alerts pile into the same thread.
It also fits Amazon's wider AI assistant stack, including Alexa+ for Prime members.
