Apple AI Budget Cuts: Daily Cap Falls From $300 to $200

Apple cut some engineers' daily AI token spend from $300 to $200 in October, with further cuts to $100 or $25 under review. Will staff AI tools slow?

Apple AI budget caps for some engineers fell to $200 a day from $300, Bloomberg reported on November 4, citing people familiar with the matter. The change landed quietly in October, even as Cupertino pushes staff to use artificial intelligence more deeply in day-to-day work.

Further reductions are under review. Some engineering teams could see daily allowances fall to as little as $100, while certain non-engineering groups already capped at $100 may drop as low as $25, according to Bloomberg. Employees who need more headroom can ask senior leaders for an exemption. Apple declined to comment.

What Does the Apple AI Budget Cap Cover?

The budgets pay for tokens, the small units of text and data that large language models process on every request. Providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google typically bill by token volume, so heavy coding, debugging and long agent loops burn through allowances quickly.

Apple staff can use Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and other models, MacRumors and Bloomberg both note. Some teams are being steered toward cheaper models or on-device AI to keep bills down. Engineers still get the highest caps because coding agents chew through tokens faster than most office tasks.

Why Is Apple Tightening AI Spend Now?

CEO John Ternus, who took over on September 1, has pushed for a leaner company with fewer management layers. That message already showed up in our coverage of his WIRED interview on shipping AI only when it is ready. Outside consultants are also reviewing efficiency in some divisions, which has fed staff worries about broader restructuring.

The timing sits next to a customer-facing squeeze as well. Apple has already signaled that Siri AI usage limits are coming, with paid expanded access for heavier users. Internally, the same cost pressure is showing up as hard daily dollar caps.

How Much Will Apple Actually Save?

Savings may be modest at first. Several employees told Bloomberg that few people hit the old $300 daily ceiling, so trimming to $200 mostly clips outliers. The bigger impact would come if $100 and $25 tiers land, forcing heavy users to seek exemptions or change how they work.

Apple's latest results still show AI infrastructure costs climbing. In the latest quarter the company posted a record $114.5 billion in revenue, while R&D for the fiscal year jumped amid higher AI spend. That contrast, record sales next to tighter token budgets, is why the report landed so hard inside Silicon Valley.

Our Take

A $200 daily AI budget is still generous for most workers. What matters more is the signal: after a year of "use AI everywhere" messaging, Apple is putting a meter on the tools. If other large employers follow, tokenmaxxing leaderboards will give way to boring but necessary cost discipline. The open question is whether the cuts slow real product work, or just stop wasteful agent loops that never shipped.
