iPhone Subscriptions Now Show Offers When You Try to Cancel

Apple now lets apps show a message, an image or a discount the moment you tap Cancel, with up to 10 messages per app. Will it save you money or slow you down?

iPhone subscriptions are about to get a little harder to walk away from. Apple now lets developers show a "retention message" the moment you tap Cancel Subscription, and that message can include an image or a special offer such as a discount or a free period. You can still cancel, but you may have to turn down a deal first.

Apple announced the change on its developer news page on November 4. Developers set the messages up in App Store Connect, the dashboard they use to manage apps and pricing, and can choose who is eligible and how long to wait between offers.

As MacRumors summed it up, apps can now try to stop you from canceling.

What Will You See When You Cancel iPhone Subscriptions?

After you tap Cancel Subscription in your Apple Account settings or on a subscription page in the App Store, a Confirm Cancellation screen appears. It shows the developer's message along with two choices: Keep Subscription or Cancel Subscription. Some apps may add a button to redeem an offer or switch to a cheaper plan.

According to Apple's App Store Connect guide, each app can create up to 10 retention messages, and each subscription can have only one active message at a time. Offers can be a discount paid monthly, a discount paid up front, or a free period.

Are There Rules Against Pushy Messages?

Yes. Every message goes through App Review. The text cannot mention prices or discounts, because everyone sees it, including people who do not qualify for the offer. Apple also bans scare tactics: a VPN app, for example, cannot claim your phone will catch a virus if you leave. Apple has been tightening App Store rules elsewhere too, recently making dating apps and AI companions 18+ only.

Why Does This Matter Now?

Apple first offered a Retention Messaging API in 2025, but it required a request and server code. What changes now is that any developer with an auto-renewable subscription can build these screens in App Store Connect with no engineering work. The API stays available by request for apps that want to pick a message per user in real time.

The timing fits a wider push to earn more from paying users, as seen with Snapchat+ chasing subscriber growth.

Apple is following the same playbook with its own services, and is preparing to sell expanded Siri AI access.

Our Take

This can actually pay off for users: one extra screen may reveal a cheaper price you would never have seen. The risk is fatigue, as canceling turns into a small negotiation in every app. Apple's ban on prices and scare tactics in the text keeps the worst tricks out, and Cancel Subscription stays on the same screen. Read the offer, and if it is not worth it, cancel anyway.
