Sony Electronics on Nov. 5, 2026, launched the Sony MDR-3R, a USB-C remake of the open-ear headphones that shipped with the original Walkman in 1979. The standard model is $59.99 in the U.S. ($99.99 CAD) and is available now at Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, and other authorized dealers, according to the Sony press release.
What Are the Sony MDR-3R Specs?
The Sony MDR-3R keeps the classic MDR-3 look with a slim headband, metal sliders, and swappable blue and orange foam ear pads. It uses the same 23 mm drivers as the 1979 design, weighs about 38 g without the cable, and stays open-ear rather than noise-isolating. A 1.2 m Y-cable ends in USB-C (USB Audio Class 1.0), with a built-in microphone and in-line remote for calls and playback.
How Much Do the Sony MDR-3R Cost?
List price is $59.99 in the United States. A Stranger Things limited edition with red and black pads, an engraved logo, and special packaging is $79.99 ($129.99 CAD) for pre-order via Sony, Netflix, and Amazon US. Sony says no charging or Bluetooth pairing is required: plug into a compatible phone and play. It does not recommend using the headphones with modern Walkman players.
Why Revive Wired Walkman Headphones Now?
Sony pitches the MDR-3R as a return to simple portable listening after years of wireless earbuds that need batteries and apps. Recycled plastic appears in part of the body, and packaging is plastic-free in many regions. Early reviews from outlets such as The Verge highlight comfort and nostalgia more than bass depth, which fits the open-ear, small-driver design.
Our Take
At $60, the Sony MDR-3R is a lifestyle accessory more than a flagship audiophile buy. Buyers who want silence on a commute should look elsewhere; buyers who want plug-and-play USB-C and 1979 styling get exactly that. On the mobile side, heavy battery phones such as the OPPO 12,000mAh battery phone show how accessories and phones keep trading convenience for different trade-offs.
