TSMC 3D DRAM Production Plans Aim to Ease Memory Crunch

The Information reported on Nov. 6, 2026 that TSMC is drafting 3D DRAM plans after a request from Nvidia, its biggest customer, amid the AI memory crunch.

TSMC 3D DRAM concept: stacked silicon memory wafers in a cleanroom fab

TSMC is drafting plans to make advanced TSMC 3D DRAM memory chips after a request from Nvidia, its biggest customer, according to a Nov. 6, 2026 Reuters summary of The Information. The foundry has not confirmed a production timeline, capacity target, or investment size, and both companies did not immediately comment.

What is TSMC 3D DRAM, and why does Nvidia want it?

DRAM stores working data temporarily in phones, PCs, and AI servers. 3D DRAM stacks memory cells vertically instead of spreading them in a single flat layer, which can raise capacity in a smaller footprint. The Information said Nvidia asked TSMC to explore that path as AI hardware demand tightens memory supply and pushes designers to hunt for extra sources.

That shortage already shows up in consumer prices, which we covered in why RAM is so expensive in 2026.

How would TSMC build capacity for 3D DRAM?

The report said TSMC could build new factories for advanced memory, or acquire an existing plant and convert it, similar to Micron buying a Taiwan fab earlier in 2026 to retrofit for DRAM. Hsu Kuo-chin, a TSMC vice president who oversees advanced packaging and previously worked at Micron, is leading the evaluation, according to The Information.

Micron's Taiwan plant pause is another reminder of how fragile memory expansion remains, as noted in our Micron Taiwan plant update.

Would TSMC compete with Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron?

If TSMC moves into advanced memory, it would step into a market long dominated by Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron. Reuters noted that the push comes while AI-driven shortages lift prices and leave chip designers scrambling. TipRanks' Nov. 6 account of the same report said TSMC ADRs jumped after the story, and stressed that 3D DRAM plans are still at the evaluation stage with no mass-production date.

Nvidia is also tightening how partners track GPU fleets, which we covered in Nvidia chip tracking for Southeast Asia cloud partners.

Our Take

TSMC 3D DRAM would stretch the company beyond pure-play logic foundry work into the most cyclical part of semiconductors. For Nvidia, any credible extra memory path matters more than branding: HBM and server DRAM bottlenecks are already shaping GPU schedules and system prices. Until TSMC names fabs, wafers, and dates, treat this as planning, not supply relief.
