Apple agentic Siri plans are getting a push from the top: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on November 8, 2026 that CEO John Ternus is urging software chief Craig Federighi to accelerate the company’s AI roadmap and move beyond simply improving voice responses.

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Ternus held a closed-door meeting with Federighi in recent weeks frustrated by what Gurman calls “a reluctance to embrace AI with the same urgency as competitors,” as 9to5Mac summarized on November 8. Apple has not commented on the report.

What is Apple trying to change in Siri?

Gurman says Apple wants Siri to become more like an agent that can keep track of goals and continue working without the user having to start every step. He compares that direction with tools such as ChatGPT Dots, Meta Muse, and Grok, according to 9to5Mac's November 8 summary of the newsletter.

On Apple’s November 2 earnings call, Ternus said Siri is “primarily request-based today” but built on “a modern orchestrator-driven architecture that gives us real room to expand its capabilities over time.”

How far along is Apple’s AI push?

Gurman believes Apple could make Siri more like an agent as early as next year, but Apple has not announced an official agentic Siri feature or release date. He also says Apple still has another AI gap: computer use, where OpenAI and Anthropic agents can operate software and click buttons, while Apple does not yet have a comparable capability.

Siri AI shipped with iOS 27 on September 14, and that iOS 27.3 beta already adds Siri AI actions in Apple apps. Gurman expects Apple app support as early as December, with third-party support likely not arriving until spring.

Who is steering the project inside Apple?

Federighi became Apple’s AI czar after last year’s dismissal of the company’s former AI leader, though Gurman says he still has a reputation as an AI skeptic. The report also says Mike Rockwell, who led Siri AI development, is still seriously considering stepping down.

In a separate note, Gurman says Apple is testing a new development pipeline that gives engineers about 50% more time to code and less time spent on integration, as coding agents improve.
