iPhone Action Button May Move to Camera Control in 2027
A November 6 leak says late 2027 iPhones may lose the dedicated button, with Camera Control handling both jobs. After only 4 years, is the experiment over?

Apple may remove the dedicated iPhone Action Button from new models arriving in the second half of 2027, according to the Chinese Weibo leaker Instant Digital. The claim, reported by MacRumors on November 6, 2026, says Camera Control would stay on the phone and take over the Action button's job.
Under the rumored setup, a single press of Camera Control would still open the Camera app, while a long press would trigger whatever function the user had assigned to the Action button. Instant Digital said the dedicated button would disappear. Apple has not confirmed the report or issued a comment.
What would happen to the iPhone Action Button?
If the leak is right, users would not lose the shortcuts themselves. Silent mode, Focus, the flashlight and Shortcuts would simply move to a long press on Camera Control. That mapping is plausible because the Action button already needs a long press, while a single press of Camera Control already opens the camera.
The awkward part is that a long press of Camera Control currently opens Visual Intelligence. MacRumors notes that Visual Intelligence has since been built into the Camera app as Siri mode in iOS 27, which could free that gesture for a customizable action. Apple is still reshaping those software controls in updates such as the iOS 27.3 public beta, but that is context, not confirmation of a hardware change.
Has Apple already shipped a phone without this button?
The Action button first appeared on the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023, replacing the ring and silent switch that dated back to the original iPhone in 2007. Camera Control followed a year later on the iPhone 16 lineup. Apple later spread the Action button across more models, so dropping it after only about four years would be a quick reversal.
There is already one modern iPhone without it. The foldable iPhone Duo keeps Camera Control but omits the Action button, a layout that sits alongside our report on iPhone Duo apps passing 100,000. MacRumors says that design offers a precedent if Apple wants fewer buttons on future flagships, including the 20th anniversary models expected in fall 2027. Those phones could be called iPhone 19 Pro, iPhone 20 Pro or something else; Apple has not said.
Why should this rumor be treated carefully?
Button rumors have missed before. MacRumors recalls an earlier claim that Apple would simplify Camera Control on the iPhone 18 lineup by dropping its capacitive sensing layer; that change did not ship. Digital Trends, also writing on November 6, 2026, warns that Camera Control already handles photography, video, settings and Visual Intelligence, so adding Action button duties could confuse people rather than tidy the design.
MacRumors also notes that losing a separate button could simplify manufacturing and reduce mix-ups with the nearby volume keys. For now the iPhone Action Button is still on current phones, and Instant Digital is only one leaker. Treat the late 2027 merge as an unconfirmed rumor until Apple shows the next design.
