Xbox Cloud Gaming now lets you use your phone as a controller on supported smart TVs, Microsoft said on November 4. The preview is rolling out in every country where Xbox Cloud Gaming is available, so players no longer need a gamepad nearby to start a cloud game on the big screen.

At the same time, players in the US can test a second feature called cloud connect with the Xbox Nano Controller. It links the controller over Wi-Fi straight to the cloud server running the game, instead of pairing it with the TV over Bluetooth. Both features are early previews, according to Xbox Wire, so supported games and devices may be limited for now.

How Does the Phone Controller Work With Xbox Cloud Gaming?

The controls open in your phone's web browser, so there is no extra app to install. Any supported Android or iOS phone can act as the gamepad. In addition, some games will get touch controls tailored to how they play.

To try it, turn on Preview Features under Settings > Account in the latest Xbox experience on a supported smart TV. Then, when you launch a game without a physical controller connected, the TV offers to use your phone for that session. You connect by scanning a QR code shown on the TV.

What Is Cloud Connect on the Xbox Nano Controller?

Input latency is the short delay between pressing a button and seeing the result on screen. In cloud gaming, every press normally travels from the controller to the TV and then to a remote server. Cloud connect skips the TV step, which Microsoft says can make games feel more responsive.

For now, cloud connect works on supported smart TVs and on the web. Setup runs through the Xbox beta app on Android or the Xbox Accessories app on PC, and the PC route requires Xbox Insider enrollment. Microsoft has a step-by-step cloud connect guide for the process.

Why Does It Matter for Players?

Microsoft keeps pushing Xbox beyond the console. For example, it recently offered a 25 Years of Xbox bundle with free games on new Windows PCs. Meanwhile, older hardware is fading out, as with Warzone ending support on PS4 and Xbox One. A phone-as-controller option lowers the barrier further, since almost everyone already owns the hardware.

Our Take

Touch controls are a handy backup, but they rarely beat a real gamepad for fast action games. Therefore, the more important test is cloud connect. If a direct Wi-Fi link really cuts lag, it could fix one of the biggest complaints about cloud gaming. However, Microsoft has not shared latency numbers yet, so we will have to wait for real-world results.
