Apple CarPlay AI Integration: Get Ready for ChatGPT

Apple is set to revolutionize the in-car experience with a major update enabling Apple CarPlay AI integration. According to recent reports, the company is preparing to allow popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini on vehicle displays, offering drivers a new way to interact with advanced assistants hands-free.

CarPlay Opens Up to Third-Party AI Integration

Information shared by a Bloomberg analyst suggests that Apple will open its Apple CarPlay platform to third-party artificial intelligence applications with an upcoming iOS update. This move marks a significant shift from the current strict rules, which only permit apps in categories like navigation, music, and communication. Consequently, the new policy will allow voice-focused AI assistants to be included in the system.

This development aims to enhance driver safety by providing a seamless, voice-activated alternative to handling a smartphone while driving. By integrating these powerful AI tools directly into the car’s infotainment system, drivers can access information and perform tasks without taking their eyes off the road.

Siri Remains the Primary Assistant

While Apple is embracing third-party AI, it is also taking steps to protect its native assistant, Siri. The report clarifies that users will not be able to access external bots directly using the voice command button on the steering wheel or through wake words. Instead, to interact with ChatGPT or Gemini, the driver will need to manually launch the respective application from the CarPlay screen.

This approach ensures that Siri remains the default, instantly accessible assistant for core vehicle functions. However, it also provides a much safer and more convenient method for using other AI services compared to using a phone.

Coming Soon with an iOS Update

It is not yet clear whether this new feature will arrive with an update in the iOS 26 series or be part of the next major release, iOS 27. Furthermore, it is known that Apple is working to enhance Siri in the background, potentially using Google’s Gemini infrastructure to make its own assistant smarter. In an era where car manufacturers are beginning to integrate their own AI systems, this step is seen as a crucial move for Apple to maintain its competitive edge.
