Apple: Mac Display doubles as smart home device

Apple is rumored to be in the process of creating a new external display for Macs with a twist. By Mark Gurman, the tech giant is engineering a smart solution whereby the display could function as a smart home device when in idle mode.

Next-gen monitor with dual functionality

Besides the smart display, Apple is said to be developing other monitor models. These could possibly be the successors to the Pro Display XDR and Apple Studio Display. The smart display is predicted to operate with an iOS device chip. This setup brings to mind the Studio Display’s mechanism, which relies on an A13 chip.

However, in the Studio Display, the software’s capabilities are primarily dedicated to enhancing the camera and speaker systems, with features like Center Stage and Spatial Audio. The concept of the new display, on the other hand, is significantly more complex and innovative.

Apple Display with dual-mode operation: A novel concept

This unique feature of functioning as a smart home device during low-power mode indicates Apple’s attempt to expand the scope of its devices. Many users pointed out that the new StandBy feature introduced in iOS 17 could be conveniently incorporated into this upcoming hardware. This StandBy feature, given its compatibility with a standalone device, makes the concept even more plausible.

However, it’s important to mention that this revolutionary smart monitor won’t be available until next year. Gurman shares this projected timeline. The arrival of this device, offering dual functionality, will be a fascinating event. It will certainly shape the direction of Apple’s product lineup. Also, its influence on the overall tech industry is expected to be significant.
