Fan Offers Ubisoft €5 Million to Revive Sands of Time Remake
A Prince of Persia fan offers Ubisoft over €5 million to restart the cancelled Sands of Time remake, asking for no profit or IP rights. Ubisoft is silent.

The Sands of Time remake could get an unusual second chance: an anonymous Prince of Persia fan has offered Ubisoft more than €5 million to restart and finish the cancelled project. The offer appeared this weekend in a letter shared on the r/PrinceOfPersia subreddit, and Ubisoft has not responded publicly.
The letter’s author describes the money as an initial budget and says it would be tied to a formal agreement, an assessment of whether the project can be revived and any terms Ubisoft sets. The fan says the goal is not profit, a share of sales or rights to the intellectual property, only to see the game released. The letter is signed simply as a fan from the community, and its authenticity has not been verified.
The fan also says the final decision belongs to Ubisoft alone. “I do not intend to interfere with the creative direction or the company’s decisions,” the letter reads. Instead, it asks whether Ubisoft has an official channel where an outside funding proposal can be submitted.
Why the Sands of Time Remake Was Cancelled
Ubisoft dropped the remake on January 21, 2026, as part of a company-wide reset. Its restructuring announcement listed six discontinued games, including the remake, four unannounced titles and a mobile game, while seven other projects were delayed.
The Prince of Persia team later explained the decision in an official statement to fans. It said the project “had real potential” but had not reached the quality players deserved, and that “continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit.”
The remake had a long and troubled history. It was announced in September 2020 with a January 2021 release date, then delayed several times while development moved from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.
Could €5 Million Actually Save It?
That is unclear. The letter does not say how much work remains, and Ubisoft has never said how much more money the remake would have needed. Reddit users were split: some praised the gesture, others called the money too small or questioned whether the offer is real. Several commenters also pointed out that Ubisoft has already written the project off in its accounts, which makes a restart harder.
Ubisoft is also busy with its own reset. The publisher is reorganizing around new creative units while pushing big releases such as the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Hexe.
Ubisoft is not the only publisher shelving long-awaited projects this year, as the Mass Effect 5 cancellation at EA showed. For now, the Prince of Persia team says it is not stepping away from the franchise, but no new game has been announced.
