In a statement, company CEO BS Teh confirmed that they are working on developing a new model that will be three times the capacity of Seagate’s current largest drive, the 36TB Exos M model.

The drive to be developed is aimed to be capable of handling the huge data volumes required by growing AI-based applications, especially those led by companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft and Google.

Training AI models requires large data sets for high accuracy and performance. This increases the need for large-scale storage solutions in data centers. Seagate aims to offer more efficient solutions by increasing not only capacity but also storage density.

The proliferation of data centers also brings environmental impacts due to high energy consumption. According to the International Energy Agency, an average ChatGPT query consumes 2.9 watt-hours of energy.

Seagate is also taking sustainability-focused steps in response to this increasing energy consumption. According to BS Teh, the company aims to switch to renewable energy in all of its production processes.
