Tecno Slim 5G proves affordable doesn’t mean basic

The Tecno Slim 5G isn’t pretending to be a flagship killer. Priced at around $200, it knows its lane, but still swerves into some surprisingly premium territory. From its razor-thin frame to a slick AMOLED display, this phone puts style and screen performance first. But beneath the surface, a few shortcuts remind you exactly what you’re paying for.

Tecno Slim 5G display and design punch above their weight

At just under 6 mm thick, the Tecno Slim 5G lives up to its name. It’s light, slim, and easy to pocket. The 6.78-inch AMOLED screen shines, literally, with 144 Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 7i protection.

The build quality tells a mixed story. The phone sports a painted metal frame and fibreglass back for decent sturdiness, but there are noticeable gaps in the housing. For a phone that looks this sleek, that kind of finish feels off.

Performance is solid, but not standout

Inside, the Slim 5G runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chip, paired with 8 GB RAM and up to 256 GB storage. Day-to-day performance feels smooth enough, especially for the price. It supports 5G, Wi-Fi ac, and Bluetooth, but skips eSIM support.

Voice calls are fine in quiet settings, though the noise cancellation can be hit-or-miss. One interesting addition is the FreeLink feature, which keeps Bluetooth devices connected when the mobile signal drops handy in tricky coverage areas.

Tecno Slim 5G features blend essentials and extras

The Tecno Slim 5G walks the line between necessity and novelty. Here’s what it brings:

• 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 144 Hz refresh rate
• MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chip with 8 GB RAM
• 5,160 mAh battery with 45 W charging
• 50 MP rear camera + 13 MP selfie camera
• FreeLink Bluetooth continuity
• In-display fingerprint sensor and LED notification strip
• IR blaster and FM radio

The camera system works well in good lighting but struggles in the dark. The dual LED flash helps a little, but not enough to salvage low-light shots. Charging takes about 111 minutes decent, but not exactly swift in a world of rapid-charge rivals.

Software and support leave room to grow

Running Android 15 with HiOS, the Tecno Slim 5G is slated for just two years of updates. That’s short, even for a mid-range phone. While an Android 16 upgrade is planned, don’t expect long-term software support.

A sleek phone with real limits

The Tecno Slim 5G delivers a standout screen, unique extras, and a bold design for a modest price. Still, it trades off durability, low-light camera performance, and long-term software support. It’s not cheap, but it’s not flawless either and Tecno’s aiming for that middle lane, not the podium.
