The iPhone 17 Pro will be aluminum! Why?

Apple is making an unexpected choice in materials for its flagship phones. According to the latest information, the company is switching from titanium frames to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. While this decision may seem like a step backwards at first, it’s a logical step for Apple’s future devices.

The iPhone 17 Pro will use an aluminum frame

Apple first introduced titanium alloy frames in 2023 with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It continued this material choice for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. However, according to a recent report by Bloomberg, the company is opting for aluminum instead of returning to stainless steel for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Even on the titanium-framed iPhones, Apple placed an aluminum midframe between the titanium edges for better heat transfer. Now, it’s being reported that the company hasn’t experienced the titanium experience to its full potential.

Aluminum stands out as the most suitable material, particularly for solving overheating issues and ensuring the more efficient operation of the vapor chamber expected in these models. Its lower production costs and lower carbon footprint were among the factors in this decision.

Aluminum’s biggest advantage over titanium is its much higher thermal conductivity. According to a table shared by user Max Weinbach on X, aluminum conducts heat approximately 33 times better than titanium. Stainless steel doesn’t offer a significant advantage in this regard.

This suggests that if Apple wants to achieve strong cooling performance with its vapor chamber, it won’t be able to achieve it with anything other than aluminum. All these details are expected to be clarified at the “Awe Inspiring” event on September 9th. Apple’s preferred metal will be made official at this event.
