Alphabet Qualcomm Stake Worth $548M Traces Back to Modular

Alphabet's 13F shows 2.98 million Qualcomm shares worth $547.9 million, but the position likely came from Qualcomm's Modular buyout, not a new cash bet.

Alphabet Qualcomm stake concept: phone chip, server board and stock certificates on a desk

The Alphabet Qualcomm stake that surfaced on Friday is worth $547.9 million, but it does not appear to be a fresh cash bet on the chipmaker. Alphabet's latest 13F filing lists 2,976,982 Qualcomm shares as of September 30, 2026, held through its venture arm GV, and earlier SEC paperwork ties those shares to Qualcomm's purchase of AI software startup Modular.

A 13F is the quarterly report large investors file with the SEC to list their US stock holdings. Alphabet's filing for the quarter ended September 30 was signed on November 5 and filed on November 6. Its June 30 report did not include Qualcomm at all, which is why the new line drew attention. Reuters reported on November 6 that Qualcomm shares rose about 3% in premarket trading after the disclosure.

Where Did the Alphabet Qualcomm Stake Come From?

The likely answer is a stock-funded acquisition. Qualcomm completed its purchase of Modular on July 28 in a deal valued at about $3.1 billion at closing, paid mostly with roughly 18 million Qualcomm shares. Modular builds software that lets AI applications run across different types of processors.

According to The Deep Dive's November 6 analysis, a July 31 SEC prospectus named two Alphabet-affiliated funds, GV 2021 and GV 2023, as holders of 2,206,989 and 989,272 Qualcomm shares. That adds up to 3,196,261 shares. The September 30 figure is 219,279 shares lower, about 6.9%, and neither company has explained the gap.

Why Does Qualcomm Need Data Center Wins?

Qualcomm's chips power most Android phones, but the smartphone market is in one of its worst downturns. The company tumbled more than 9% on Thursday after disappointing September-quarter results and a broader post-election tech selloff. It now expects data center chip revenue to reach $15 billion by 2029, and in September it signed a deal letting Amazon buy up to $60 billion of its AI data center chips.

Google already works with Qualcomm on Android, on its Googlebook laptops and on automotive AI. Google also designs its own AI accelerators, which we compared in our TPU vs GPU explainer, so any chip partnership on the server side would be a bigger signal than a venture holding.

What Else Was in Alphabet's Filing?

The same report shows Alphabet raising its SpaceX position to about 555 million shares from 551.2 million. The total value of the holdings table fell to about $88.3 billion from $99.1 billion in June.

Our Take

Headlines saying Google "invested" $548 million in Qualcomm overstate what the filing shows. This looks like a venture investment in Modular that turned into Qualcomm stock when the startup was sold. That still matters for Qualcomm's data center pitch, because the market rewarded the news at a fragile moment, but the real signal to watch is a commercial deal, not a 13F line. Big cloud players are spreading their bets across suppliers, as Google's own $15 billion Malaysia data center plan and Nvidia's push into TSMC 3D DRAM show. Until Alphabet or Qualcomm says more, treat this as a portfolio holding with a good story behind it.
