CATL Lithium Air Battery 2000 km Figure Remains Theoretical
CarNewsChina said on November 7 that CATL is treating lithium air as long term research. The 3,505 Wh/kg number is theoretical. Is 2000 km realistic yet?

The CATL lithium-air battery idea is back in circulation, but it is still a research path, not a car you can order. Adrian Leung of CarNewsChina reported on November 7, 2026 that CATL chief scientist Wu Kai identified lithium air technology as a long term research direction at the 2026 Equipment Powerhouse Forum.
Chinese technology outlet IT Home had revived claims that lithium air batteries could give electric cars up to 2,000 km of range and about five times the energy density of solid state batteries. CarNewsChina says CATL has not announced a 2,000 km production car target or a commercial launch schedule.
How much energy could a CATL lithium-air battery store?
The figure often repeated alongside these claims is about 3,505 Wh/kg. CarNewsChina says that number describes the electrochemical potential of the theoretical lithium peroxide reaction, including the mass of the oxygen reactant. It is not the rating of a complete automotive battery pack.
In this chemistry, metallic lithium serves as the negative electrode and oxygen from the surrounding air is the positive reactant. During discharge, lithium reacts with oxygen to form lithium peroxide inside a porous cathode. Charging reverses the reaction and releases oxygen again.
Why is a 2000 km pack still out of reach?
A finished pack also has to carry electrolytes, electrodes, protective parts and air handling gear, all of which add weight and volume. Figures that approach 12,000 Wh/kg leave oxygen mass out of the calculation, and CarNewsChina says those are not complete pack ratings either.
Moisture and carbon dioxide can damage the cell, rechargeability and cycle life remain hard problems, and cars also need power density and compact volume, not only energy per kilogram. Those limits are why nearer term battery work, including the Sunwoda solid-state battery heat test we covered, is getting more attention than lithium air.
What is CATL building first?
CarNewsChina says CATL's nearer term priorities remain sodium ion and all solid state batteries, while lithium air stays a longer term exploratory research reserve. Separate lab results, including a 2024 pouch cell at 757.5 Wh/kg over 241 cycles, are not CATL production cells.
Sodium based chemistry is already a live research theme, as we noted in our report on a sodium metal battery that kept most of its capacity after 1,000 cycles. Until CATL publishes a prototype, customer or timetable, treat the 2,000 km figure as a theoretical possibility, not a product plan.
